'It's a bit crazy' - Arthur Okonkwo reveals quirky pre-match superstition that leaves him 'a bit dry' ahead of Wrexham's clash with Birmingham
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has revealed a rather unusual pre-match superstition ahead of his side's FA Cup clash with Birmingham City.
The Red Dragons will host the Blues at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday in the fourth round of the competition.
Okonkwo, who is on loan from Arsenal, has admitted to drinking a pint of orange juice before matches to stay focused and hydrated.
"It's a bit crazy, but I always have a pint of orange juice before a game," Okonkwo said.
"I don't know why, but it just helps me to get in the zone and stay focused.
"I've been doing it for a few years now and it seems to be working, so I'm not going to change it now."
Okonkwo's superstition may seem a little strange, but it's nothing compared to some of the other pre-match rituals that footballers have been known to follow.
For example, former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar used to wear the same pair of socks for every game, while former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas would always kiss his wedding ring before taking to the pitch.
Whatever their superstitions, Okonkwo and his Wrexham teammates will be hoping that they can cause an upset against Birmingham on Saturday.
The Blues are a League One side, two divisions above Wrexham, but the Red Dragons have already shown that they are capable of beating higher-ranked opposition in this season's FA Cup.
They beat Coventry City in the second round and then held Sheffield United to a draw in the third round before winning the replay.
Okonkwo will be hoping that his pre-match pint of orange juice can help him to another good performance on Saturday.
