Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film charts the life and career of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the director of the Manhattan Project, the U.S. research and development effort that produced the atomic bomb during World War II. Cillian Murphy stars as Oppenheimer, with Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves, the director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. The film has been a critical and commercial success, grossing over $220 million worldwide. It has also been nominated for 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor for Murphy.
